The Crime Victims Foundation of Nigeria (CRIVIFON) has commended the Inspector General of Police (IGP) Kayode Egbetokun for bold steps taken to ensure the enforcement of the provisions of the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017.
The Executive Director of the Foundation, Mrs. Gloria Egbuji in a statement on Thursday
expressed delight in the recent circular by the police boss.
The circular sent to all police formations in the country, directed them to ensure strict compliance with the Act which has been in existence since 2017 but largely disobeyed by both police and medical personnel in various parts of the country.
The IGP in a circular letter signed on his behalf by his Principal Staff Officer, Olatunji Disu, dated October 25, 2023 had directed Deputy Inspectors General of Police, Assistants Inspector General of Police, Commissioners of Police in charge of State Commands, Commandants of Police Colleges and others to ensure strict compliance to a letter dated 3rd October, 2023 from the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare on the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017.
On the strength of the letter, Egbetokun had also directed all senior officers to ensure that the Act is made a subject of lecture which should be widely circulated for members of the public to be aware of Police compliance with the national law.
CRIVIFON has expressed appreciation that police top management is now taking the issue of compulsory treatment of gunshot and accident victims with the seriousness it deserves as many lives have been lost over the years due to non compliance.
It would be recalled that the Foundation in collaboration with other stakeholders had championed the issue of non treatment of gunshot and accidents for about two decades before it was finally legislated upon and given a presidential assent in 2017.
