Many people were feared dead as a passenger train crushed a Lagos state government owned staff bus at PWD junction, Ikeja area of the state in the early hours of yesterday (Thursday).
Eye witnesses said the train which was coming from Agege and ran into the staff bus number 250033 which was crossing the rail to link Ikeja GRA.
The train ran into the bus in the middle and pushed it for some distance on the rail before coming to a stop.
It was not clear where the bus was coming from nor where it was heading as survivors were too traumatic to speak.
It was also not certain the number of casualties but the Marcapolo staff bus was smeared with blood of the victims.
Rescue workers were seen having a hectic time evacuating the victims of the accident.
Many of the injured victims were rushed to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital (LASUTH), Ikeja.
The accident caused a gridlock on the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway for motorists coming from Oshodi towards Shogunle, Ikeja-along towards Iyana Ipaja.
A Statement issued by the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority on the accident today said: "A Lagos State Government staff bus with registration no 04A- 48LA was on Thursday morning crushed by a moving train at PWD, Ikeja area of Lagos.
The Director, Public Affairs and Enlightenment Department of the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority, Adebayo Taofiq, confirmed the accident in a statement.
The accident recorded many casualties as the staff bus was fully loaded with govt staff going to the office this morning,” the statement added.
